Chad Coulter, Deputy Chief of Operations
Chad Coulter was appointed Deputy Chief of Operations of the Madison Township Fire Department (MTFD) on January 1, 2024. Chad first joined the MTFD in August 2023 as a paramedic and the Fire Marshal. He brings more than 20 years of fire service experience to his position.
Chad is a third-generation firefighter. Both his father and grandfather served with the Beech Bottom Volunteer Fire Department (BBVFD) in Beech Bottom, West Virginia – where Chad had his first fire service experience as a Junior Firefighter when he was in eighth grade. While still in high school, he earned his EMT and served an internship with Brooke County EMS (BCEMS) in Brooke County, WV.
When Chad turned 18, he accepted a position as an EMT with BCEMS, while also serving as a volunteer on the BBVFD. In 2006 Chad obtained his paramedic certification. When Chad left West Virginia to move to Indiana, he was a Captain with the BBVFD and worked as a paramedic for BCEMS.
Chad’s first position in Indiana was as a paramedic at Wishard EMS in Indianapolis. From 2008-2012, he served as a firefighter/paramedic and fire investigator with the Plainfield Fire Department in Hendricks County. Then, from 2012-2022, he served as a firefighter/paramedic and the Fire Marshal with the Danville Fire Department (DFD).
In 2022-2023, Chad left DFD to work at Indiana University Health West Hospital Emergency Department as a paramedic. Chad then transferred within IU Health to pursue the unique experience of serving as a flight medic for Indiana University Health Lifeline – where patients are transported via helicopter and ambulance from throughout the state of Indiana, as well as Western Ohio and Eastern Illinois, to hospitals for care.
Chad is married and has one son. When asked why he does this job he enthusiastically says, “… it is the only thing I ever wanted to do.” When he and other kids, “… ran excitedly after fire trucks and ambulances, I was able to tell the other kids all about what kinds of things the firefighters and paramedics were doing.”
Chad is passionate about serving Madison Township residents and visitors, and is glad to be working with Fire Chief Anthony McClure and his other MTFD colleagues to fulfill the department’s mission.
